About Us
Where Healthcare Meets Heart, and Every Village Matters
That’s why The Village Microclinic exists. We deliver quality, compassionate healthcare directly to those who need it most.
Our mission
We deliver accessible, high-quality, and compassionate healthcare to women and children in peri-urban and underserved communities of Burundi, to live healthier, stronger, and more dignified lives.
Our vision
A Burundi where every woman and child, regardless of where they live, has access to the healthcare they need to thrive.
Our story
Dr Tharcisse Nshimirimana was working as a doctor in a prestigious medical facility in Burundi. Over the decades, Dr Nshimirimana, while off duty and at home, would receive visits and requests for transportation to hospitals kilometres away from community members with ailing and critically ill relatives.
His home transformed from a sanctuary to an emergency room, where he attended to community members who were unable to afford quality care and access to ambulances. He would stabilise the patients and then rush them to the hospital in his car, knowing that due to the distance, many would not make it in time.
After years of this, Dr Nshimirimana decided to take a bold step. He decided that no mother should give birth without care, no child should suffer from a preventable illness, and no family should be left behind. He launched The Village Microclinic in a marginalised community on the outskirts of Bujumbura.
We listened. We learned. And we built a model that works for small, community-rooted clinics that offer essential services close to home. Since then, we’ve grown into a trusted lifeline for thousands of families in Bujumbura.
The Village Microclinic started in a two-room rental property in 2019. It is now a Level 2 facility with a 20-inpatient bed capacity, featuring a maternity ward, an outpatient clinic offering nutritional services, maternal and child clinics, preventive care, support for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and asthma, clinical services, medication, and referrals for advanced medical care. We also have a team of dedicated and trained community health workers who serve, educate, diagnose, refer, and map diseases in the community.
